Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) — Comparison to Temporal Arteritis (Giant Cell Arteritis)

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Giant cell arteritis (a.k.a., Horton’s temporal arteritis) belongs to the vasculitis group of diseases and affects the great vessels, especially branches of the carotid arteries in the head. Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) was formerly regarded as an independent disease. Nowadays, due to shared accumulations, it is also commonly assumed that these two diseases are caused by identical pathogeneses, those of inflammatory involvement of the proximal peripheral arteries. Often, both phenomena occur simultaneously. Hence, a joint overview of both diseases follows, belonging to some of the most common rheumatologic diseases.

Development of giant cell (temporal) arteritis in a patient 'adequately' treated for polymyalgia rheumatica.

A 70-year-old woman presenting with typical polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and a normal temporal artery biopsy appeared to respond completely to low-dose prednisone therapy. A subsequent biopsy showing temporal arteritis with a normal sedimentation rate and no recurrence of myalgic symptoms emphasizes the unpredictable course of treated PMR and the need for continued clinical as well as laborator...

The history of polymyalgia rheumatica/giant cell arteritis.

Only two years separate the initial descriptions of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) by Bruce in 1888 and giant cell arteritis (GCA) by Hutchinson in 1890. However, the existence of an association between these two conditions was definitely accepted only in 1964. Even if PMR is generally accepted as a different disease from GCA, some authors deem PMR to be a manifestation of a generalised arteritis...

A 62-year-old woman presented with 4 months of neck, shoulder, and hip pain, morning stiffness, and elevated inflammatory markers compatible with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). Cervical spine imaging demonstrated ill-defined enhancement in posterior neck soft tissues (figure 1), consistent with interspinous bursitis. She reported right-sided headache. Brain magnetic resonance angiography demonst...
